Giving Back During the Holidays at Big Brothers Big Sisters

In addition to family, carols, and snow, November and December may also bring stress and anxiety, especially when it comes to giving and receiving gifts.

Adopt-a-Family is a program through which Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs specially selected families of our Littles with sponsors who “adopt” them to provide holiday gifts and sometimes help with a holiday meal. It all started when Bigs, recognizing some of the tough financial situations of parents/guardians in our program, started asking if they could buy holiday gifts for their mentees and their siblings. We have rules against mentors buying gifts for mentees (mentors play many roles but Santa is not one of them). However, we saw an opportunity to connect people in need with the generous people in our network!

Every holiday season since 2010, BBBSM has connected generous donors with families in our program who need assistance for gifts. Donors get to choose the size family they would like to adopt and then receive a list of the children’s first names, ages, sizes, and gift preferences of each child.

Are you looking for ways to pay your good fortune forward? This year we are looking for donors for 28 families with more than 80 children who are in need.  If you’re interested in adopting a family in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, email kjelden@bbbsomaha.org by November 16.

Another way you can give back to BBBS this holiday season is donating unused tickets or passes to holiday performances, shows, or events. We always have matches who would like to attend plays or performances like A Christmas Carol or The Nutcracker. It’s such a fun time for youth to be out experiencing community events!
