National Mentoring Month

About National Mentoring Month

Established in 2002, National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors and how each of us can work together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for our young people.

How are we participating?

As a member of MENTOR Nebraska, a platform that connects volunteers with the mentoring organization that best fits them in Nebraska, BBBS is participating in their corporate mentoring challenge. The challenge consists of businesses and corporations inviting mentoring organizations across the city to share with employees the different ways they can help our community.

Our CEO Nichole Turgeon, was able to sit down with KETV’s James Wilcox, to talk about our National Mentoring Month and the importance of being a mentor. Big Brother Tommy Nguyen was interviewed by 3 News Now’s Alex McLoon, about his experience being a Big over the past four years.

If you don’t follow us on social media, please do. If you do, I’m sure you have seen mentoring organizations using the hashtags #NationalMentoringMonth #MentorIRL to highlight mentors throughout the month. Check out the hashtags on social media! You might see a familiar face making a difference.

College Visits: We have visited the College of Saint Mary to recruit Big Sisters. We presented to college students interested in community service at UNO to connect the dots between what they are studying and mentoring. To continue the collegiate momentum, we will also be at Creighton University and Bellevue University in February.

In honor of National Mentoring Month, standalone Starbucks locations have welcomed Big Brothers Big Sisters matches into their stores by offering a special deal. Littles will receive a free hot chocolate with a Bigs’ purchase through the month of January.

The Big Social: Game Night

To celebrate our mentors, we are taking over Spielbound on Thursday, January 31 from 6 to 9 pm. The event is free and open to the public. The first 25 people in the door will receive their first drink on us. We will also be providing food, so come hungry! Omaha Virtual Reality will be there to bring their virtual reality arcade to you. Current Bigs will receive a raffle ticket for every guest they bring (no Littles). Another way to earn raffle tickets is to beat the three Game Masters at their respective games. You can RSVP HERE!

We hope to see you there!
