Ted Talk: BBBS Edition

By Austin White, Marketing and Recruitment Specialist

There are currently 778 Bigs (mentors) matched with a Little in our program. Whether it be through a news story, a billboard, or their own volition, they come to us in many ways. One way we recruit volunteers is through lunch and learns at different businesses and organizations around the Omaha metro. Just this year we’ve had the pleasure of sharing our mission at: Securities America, Inc., Sojern, Conagra Brands, Inc., Verdant Group and Medefis. On the docket: LinkedIn, Valmont Industries, Tenaska, Inc. and Atlas MedStaff. The recruitment team is a flexible bunch so we can work with whatever your scheduling needs are.  Our presentation can range anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. We usually use a PowerPoint, but it is not a necessity as the recruitment teams are pretty much experts on this stuff.

Our biggest source of volunteers is through word of mouth from parents with a youth in the program and our current Bigs. Sharing stories with your coworkers about your experience as part of the program may pique their interest. Having us there to provide a little more information could be the push they need to make an impact, too. Big Brothers Big Sisters has many other opportunities to get involved such as becoming a bowler for Bowl for Kids’ Sake, joining the Service League or being a Match Maker. If you are interested in having us present at your business or organization over your lunch hour or any other time, you can reach me at awhite@bbbsomaha.org.
