Developing Youth and Defending Their Potential

By Austin White, Marketing and Recruitment Specialist

In 2018, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands and The Y announced we will be partnering to help recruit mentors for our community-based mentoring program. On April 28th, we were able to help with The Y’s Healthy Kids Day at the new Bubble Zone; the first of many pairings going forward (see photos below).

We will have staff members spending time at each YMCA location to help answer any questions about being a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters and other ways to get involved. To make the process more convenient for potential volunteers, we are hosting information sessions and mentor trainings at The YMCAs around Omaha and Council Bluffs. Check our Information Session page to see if we’ll be at a YMCA near you.

What are the perks of being a YMCA member and a Big?

Mentees can be added to a mentor’s valid, active YMCA membership as a guest, at no cost for the duration of their relationship. Your membership will allow you to bring your mentee to any of the ten Greater Omaha YMCA locations and at the Blair Family YMCA. Your membership also includes reduced rates on programs such as swim lessons, sports, gymnastics and much more! A volunteer can also join The Y within one month of becoming a Big and will have their joining fee waived. We are excited to have The Y on board as defenders of potential to help us continue making an impact in our community!
