Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States from September 15th through October 15th to commemorate Hispanics living in the United States and embrace their culture from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.  

As a first-generation immigrant, I've learned the importance of embracing my culture, being proud of my background, and passing it on to my children and the people around me. I came to the United States as a child and learned at an early age to be proud of who I am, despite the obstacles that come with being a person of color. It has always been my motivation to grow, and I've been inspired by many people in my life to never let your background become an obstacle to success. 

One of the most incredible things to celebrate about Hispanic Heritage Month is not only to celebrate our backgrounds but embrace the richness of growing up with two cultures and gathering the best of both worlds. This, at times, can be challenging growing up. Being a person of color comes with many disadvantages and can be why many people of similar backgrounds may feel ashamed for who they have been labeled as. Despite the challenges this may bring, great leaders in our community work daily to break these barriers that many may experience over time. 

At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month by continually educating ourselves, celebrating it with our matches, and having great staff members representing Hispanic culture. We have many matches that are part of the Latino Mentoring Program. We continue to expand it by being present in the community and reaching out to our families in their native language. Breaking language barriers has helped our families to feel more engaged in the program; therefore, we have seen more successful matches over the years.  

I am also a proud Big Sister to my Little Sister Vale, a senior in high school. I have known my Little for about eight years. One of my most significant accomplishments as a Big Sister has been seeing my Little grow and seeing her become a young woman full of confidence and goals. Sharing our struggles as Latinas while having the resilience to take those challenges as opportunities to continue growing and feeling proud of our backgrounds. One may not see this at the beginning of the relationship, but as time progresses, you see your little bloom and celebrate with them all their successes.  

Therefore, it is essential to continue celebrating and embracing our cultural backgrounds and be active in our communities to advocate for those who are unable to have a voice due to language barriers and to be present in the lives of our youth to help them navigate through the challenges they may be experiencing.

El Mes de la HIspanidad es celebrado en los Estados Unidos del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre para conmemorar los Hispanos que viven en Estados Unidos y así resaltar la cultura de España, Mexico, Centro y Sudamerica y el caribe. 

Siendo un inmigrante de primera generación, he aprendido la importancia de conmemorar mi cultura, estar orgullosa de mis raíces y compartirlo con mis hijos y las personas en mi entorno. LLegué a los Estados Unidos siendo una niña y aprendí a una edad temprana de estar orgullosa de quién soy, sin importar los obstáculos que conlleva ser una persona de color. Siempre ha sido mi motivación para crecer al igual que me han inspirado muchas personas en mi vida que nunca hay que dejar que nuestras raíces sean un empidimmiento para superarse.

Una de las cosas más increíbles de la celebración del Mes de la Hispanidad no es solamente celebrar nuestras raices, sino resaltar la riqueza que es crecer en dos culturas y aprovechar lo mejor de ambos mundos. Esto en ocasiones, puede acarrear retos mientras uno va creciendo. Ser una person de color trae consigo muchas desventajas y puede ser la razón por la cual personas con antecedentes similares puden sentirse avergonzados de lo que han sido etiquetados. A pesar de los desafios que pudiera acarrear, nuestros lideres en la comunidad trabajan diariamente para romper con estos obstáculos que muchos podran experimentar con el tiempo. 

En Big Brothers Big Sisters conmemoramos el Mes de la HIpanidad al seguir educándonos, celebrando con los participantes del programa, y teniendo un personal que represente la cultura Hispana. Tenemos muchos emparejados que son parte del Programa de Mentoria Latino. Seguimos expandiendolo al estar presente en la comunidad y al comunicarnos con las familias en su lengua natal. El romper las barreras de lenguaje ha ayudado que nuestras familias se sientan más involucrados en el programa, por lo que, hemos visto unas amistades mas exitosas. 

También soy una orgullosa Big Sister a Vale, una joven que esta en el doceavo año de preparatoria. He conocido a mi Little por casi 8 años. Uno delos logros como Big Sister ha sido ver a mi Little crecer y verla convertirse en una mujer joven llena de confianza y metas. Compartir nuestros desafíos como Latinas y tener la resiliencia para que esos retos son oportunidades de continúo crecimiento y sentirnos orgullosas de nuestras raíces .Uno no puede ver esto al principio de la relación, pero con el tiempo, uno puede ver a su Little florecer y aplaudirle sus logros.

Por lo que, es importante seguir celebrando y conmemorando nuestras raices y estar activos en nuestra comunidad para seguir defendiendo aquellas personas que no pueden tener una voz por la barrera delenguage y estar presentes en las vidas de los jóvenes para ayudarles a navegar los retos que pudieran estar experimentando.
