National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Big Sister Frances

Meet Big Sister Frances!

How long have you been a volunteer? 20+ years

What inspired you to volunteer with our organization? Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands allowed me to do my part on my time. I heard great things about the organization before I looked into it, and one day I decided to try and join. I have not looked back since. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands has supportive staff, great resources and is always looking for new ways to reach our youth.

What has been your favorite thing about volunteering so far? The small wins. When you see a smile for something as simple as an ice cream cone or when your Little says, “thank you” without being told to do it, or just her waiting with excitement for our next outing. I like giving back and the good feeling I get from helping someone else grow and develop by spending time with them.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming volunteering? Just do it. If you wait for the right time, it will never happen. Everyone has busy lives and things going on. You can volunteer for 1-2 hours and know that you have made an impact on someone’s life. Even if you do not choose Big Brothers Big Sisters, volunteer somewhere. Just think what a better world we’d live in if everyone did some act of kindness!

Anything else you would like to add? My experiences with Big Brothers Big Sisters has brought joy and fun into my life while teaching me the game of the life. The relationships I have developed let me know I chose the right place. I know that I have gotten just a much or more out of it than my Little Sister.

Thank you for being a volunteer, Frances!
