Former Little Testimonial by Kaylee

How long were you matched for? 6 years beginning in 2002

What was your favorite part about being matched? I always had someone to talk to and teach me things about life.

Do you have a favorite memory? Attending my Big Sister’s wedding!

How did having a Big impact you? I think we often take for granted simple things like bowling or going to the movies… not every kid gets the opportunity to do those things. She helped give me a bit of normalcy in my life.

Are there any life lessons or values you learned from your Big that stuck with you? If you work hard, you can be rewarded accordingly… but to also enjoy the ride.

Did you face any challenges during your time in the program, and how did your Big help provide support/guidance? I had consistent home challenges throughout my youth and having a Big gave me an escape from reality. It gave me the opportunity to actually be a kid.

What advice would you give to other Littles who are currently in the program? It may be a little scary getting to know a stranger at first, but Bigs have good intentions and want to create a positive relationship and experience for the both of you.

What would you say to others who are thinking about becoming a Big? You can easily impact someone’s life….big or small. But at the same time… they can leave a mark on yours too.

Do you have any contact with your Big now? Yes! We still talk every once in a while!

How has your perspective on mentorship evolved since your time in the program? I would not be who I am today without the support of mentorship. It truly takes a village to help raise someone and give them the opportunities to reach their full potential.

If you could say something directly to your Big, what message of gratitude would you share with them? I am grateful that you were in my life during such pivotal years of my childhood. You helped show me what it was like to let loose and be a kid, but also what a normal pathway is to adulthood and how education is involved with that. You also taught me how to appreciate two door cars... and Matchbox Twenty! Thank you for taking a chance on me!
