National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Big Brother Dan and Little Brother Anthony

Meet Big Brother Dan and Little Brother Anthony! They’ve been matched for over eight years in our Community-Based Mentoring program. Read more about Dan’s experience in our program below.

What inspired you to become a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands?

I was blessed to be surrounded by numerous mentors throughout my life. I experienced firsthand the positive impact and influence a mentor can have on an individual. BBBS allows us to use and share our God given skills, knowledge, and experience to be that mentor who can help our mentee realize and reach their full potential.

How has being a mentor changed or enriched your life?

I quickly realized mentoring is a reciprocal relationship. We both contribute to each other’s growth, development, and success. I’ve learned from my mentee’s experiences and perspectives, which has enriched my own life in a meaningful and profound way. Anthony has become the brother I never had growing up.

How do you think mentorship contributes to building stronger communities?

As mentors we have the opportunity to provide guidance, support, and encouragement to youth while also helping them navigate challenges and seize opportunities. This positive cycle of learning and guidance creates a ripple effect, with the ultimate goal of leading mentees to develop into high-character leaders and role models amongst the community.

What would you tell others who are thinking of becoming a volunteer mentor?

Becoming a mentor was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s a rewarding experience that allows you to make a positive impact on someone else’s life while also growing personally and professionally. Recognize there are significant personal rewards - not necessary economic in nature - when you invest in and serve others.

What are some similarities you and your mentee share? What activities do you enjoy doing together?

We both enjoy fishing, watching Husker sports, working out, and spending quality time with family and friends. He’ll say he can bench press more than me, but we both know that’s not true.
