National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Big Sister Kahyra and Little Sister Kynlee

Meet Big Sister Kahyra and Little Sister Kynlee! They’ve been matched for almost two years in our Community-Based Mentoring program. Read more about Kahyra’s experience in our program below.

What inspired you to become a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands?

Initially, I was looking for a group to volunteer with. My academic advisor suggested BBBS. There was a fear I had becoming a part of this program, but the minute I met my Little and just fully embraced the process that fear went away.

How has being a mentor changed or enriched your life?

I would say I never really got out of my house and experienced all that Omaha has to offer. Being a Big has forced me to be social and go out and make connections within the community, as well as make memories with my Little.

What are some similarities you and your mentee share? What activities do you enjoy doing together?

We love to shop and fuel our caffeine addictions. We love sweets and getting out of the house to explore. TikTok is one of our favorite apps and we both love listening to the new top hits.

What would you tell others who are thinking of becoming a volunteer mentor?

Do it!
